Introduction

This short document provides the reader with an overview of the work of the Eagles Computational Lexicons Working Group (CLWG), carried out in the timeframe October 1994 to April 1996. It describes the context in which the different documents produced in this phase should be seen, and their interrelationships.

The aim of this introduction is to give a short summary and a coherent picture of the work of the CLWG. We do so by giving the following information:

• A description of the principles underlying the EAGLES work in general and the work of the CLWG in particular;
• A summary of the axes of the work of the CLWG, in terms of fragment coverage, language coverage, prioritary topics, etc.;
• A brief account of the methodology developed in the CLWG for the creation of guidelines and proposals for standards in the field of computational lexicons and their applications;
• A summary of the outcome of the main axes of work, in the fields of proposals for standards and of their validation.

All parts are extensively cross-linked to the actual documents themselves. Thus, the WWW user can consult the respective documents directly, whenever appropriate, or can first consult the abstracts contained in this document before (or as an alternative to) going to the documents themselves.
