The formalisations have been made available with a number of objectives
in mind:
- To provide interpretation guidelines for the tables containing
the inventory of descriptive devices and of lexical classes
distinguished with their help;
- To provide as precise definitions as possible of the
classifications of interest, in order to base operational guidelines on
these definitions (see below);
- To support automatic applications (such as the tagset mapping system relating ELM-EN with the UPenn and BNC
tagsets (EAGLES, 1996h));
