The MULTILEX architecture distinguishes two ``packages'' ofdescriptions
of lexical items, GPMU and LU.
The motivations within MULTILEX for having two
nodes around which the lexical information is distributed are basically:
- safe extraction of data and (re-)combination of information from/into
MULTILEX dictionaries,
- language- and theory-independence of the architecture,
- modularity of each linguistic level linked as a whole entity to one
of the nodes which in turn are linked together to produce a full lexical
description.
Relations between linguistic levels being an exceptional mesure occurring only
in ``hard cases''.
- no need to overload the whole structure to account for exceptional
behaviours that can be dealt with using simple appropriate devices.
The main points about the MULTILEX packaging are thus related
to the form/meaning distinction and to maintenance and
update.
The GENELEX architecture distinguishes three ``packages'' of
descriptions of lexical items, UM, USYN and USEM.
The motivations within GENELEX for having the three
levels of description are basically:
- gains in descriptive expressivity, in order to welcome
lexical data elaborated within different theoretical frameworks,
- focus on syntax as compared with ``semantic first"
editorial dictionaries,
where syntax is often under-specified,
- possibility of a more modular working organization when constructing
an electronic lexicon.
