The awareness of the interrelation between morphosyntactic encoding in
the lexicon and morphosyntactic annotation in corpora,
i.e. between lexicon specifications and corpus tags, guided the approach adopted in our two working
groups.
The two EAGLES subgroups on morphosyntax in corpora and morphosyntax in lexicons
have always worked in close cooperation, and much attention was paid to
the definition of compatible sets of attributes and values. Two
documents have been elaborated by the two subgroups -- one on lexicon
specifications (the present report) and the other on
corpus tagsets (EAGLES, 1996). The recommendations must be seen as
two complementary sets, examining similar sets of phenomena from
different viewpoints, a more general one (the lexicon recommendations) capable of being
directly mapped onto an application oriented one (the corpus recommendations).
