Bracketing of segments involves the delimitation by
bracketing, usually with square brackets, of the segments
which are recognised as having a syntactic integrity
(sentences, clauses, phrases, words).
In example 3,
(3) | [[He] [walked [into [the garden]]]]
|
the garden is one unit within into
the garden, which in turn is a unit within walked into
the garden. He is a unit in its own right. The
outermost brackets indicate that the whole sentence is a unit.
